WBBL History
WICL
In early 2014, a Women’s International Cricket League was created by former Australian cricketer Lisa Sthalekar and Australian Businessman Shaun Martyn.
This was a year before the introduction of the Women’s Big Bash League. And this Australia Women’s League T20 championship had the strong support of the top female players and the ICC.
However, Cricket Australia and the Cricket Boards of England and Wales refused to endorse the WICL. And then, a year later the WBBL cricket was introduced. WICL was rejected because of the objection that it was run by a private company. However, WBBL T20 is run by the National Cricket Board of Australia.
Australian Women’s T20 Cup
Before establishing the Women’s Cricket Big Bash League, Cricket Australia held a national-level T20 competition. It ran from the season 2007-2008 through 2014-2015. It was a 50-over championship with the final played as a double-header alongside the Big Bash League.
Later on, WBBL – Women’s Big Bash League was introduced, back in 2015. It was an attempt to highlight female cricket in Australia. And no doubt, the efforts proved helpful and Australia Women’s T20 Bash League highlighted the professionalism of elite-level female cricketers. Plus, it increased the sponsorship, as women across the country started watching the WBBL.
