CPL History
In 2006, the T20 format of cricket started in West Indies on a domestic level. At that time, the tournament as named Standaford 20/20 and it was organized privately. After the first edition of the game in 2006, it was added into the West Indies Cricket Board also Known as WICB for the second and third edition of the championship. This was done in 2008 however in 2009, the championship came to an end. The sponsor for the tournament was Allen Standaford and he was arrested for fraud because of which the tournament came to an end.
Almost after two months, a new generation of the game was started by the West Indies Cricket Board which was named Caribbean Twenty20. It was also on T20 format and was played on the domestic level. However in the September of 2012, the West Indies Cricket Board announced that a new and improved tournament on the T20 format will be emerging in West Indies soon enough. The name for this tournament was set to be Caribbean Premier League also known as CPL. It was decided and announced on December 13th, 2012 that the new version of the game that is Caribbean Premier League will be launched in 2013 and the sponsor for this tournament was chosen to be Caribbean mobile network Digicel. There were six teams that participated in the initial season of the Caribbean Premier League. The teams that are included in the CPL are Jamaica Tallawahs, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Barbados Tridents, Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel and St Lucia Zouks. The first edition of the game took in 2013 as it was planned by the West Indies Cricket Board. For this season, the championship started on July 30th, 2013 and it came to an end on August 24, 2013. The victors of this series was Jamaica Tallawahs and the runner ups were Guyana Amazon Warriors. Also many Caribbean Premier League records have been set in the tournament’s short history.
CPL Tournament Format
It is a T20 format tournament. In a single match, two innings are involved and each inning contains twenty overs that are given to each team. There are six teams involved in the series. There are two stages for the CPL T20 format. These two stages are group stage and knock out stage. First comes the group stage in which all the teams plays a total of ten matches. From these ten matches three matches are played in the home ground of the teams. It should be noted that six stadiums are used for conducting the Caribbean Premier League as the home to the six teams in the tournament. After the group phase comes the knock out stage which is also known as play off stage. There are a total of three matches in the knockout stage that are two semi-finals and one final match.

CPL Sponsorships
The first ever sponsor of the Caribbean Premier League in 2013 was Caribbean mobile network Digicel. However, for the season of 2022, the sponsor for CPL cricket is Hero MotorCap. It has been the biggest sponsor for the Caribbean Premier League since 2015. Throughout the years, the sponsorship of the CPL T20 has changed hands and become a point for frauds and illegal accusations. However, after the struggle, Hero MotorCap has become the biggest sponsor for the league.
