Domestic cricket has always been the highlight in the Indian cricket world. It has opened new paths for many young cricketers and has given such stars to the world of cricket!
Just like that, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is an Indian domestic cricket league that has given IPL, to players like Dinesh Karthik, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer and many more. The Board of Control for Cricket in India organized this league and its first edition was held in 2008-2009.
Before that, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was launched as the Inter-State T20 Championship in 2006-2007. Later, it was relaunched and renamed to Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, after the name of India’s former test cricketer, Syed Mushtaq Ali.
Till now, there have been 13 editions of this league. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Baroda, and Gujrat have been the most successful teams of Mushtaq Ali Trophy. In the latest edition, Tamil Nadu were the defending champions and they defeated Karnataka by 4 wickets.
All the teams that take part in Ranji Trophy are featured in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as well. At first, there were a total of 27 teams. But, now the number has increased to 38 with a format that divides this number into 6 groups.
Out of these 6 units, five are the elite groups comprising of 6 teams. And one is the plate group having 8 teams. The league stage is followed by the knockout stage where winners of each elite group directly qualify for the quarter-finals. While the runners-up of the elite group and the winner of the plate group played the preliminary QF. This makes up the final 8 teams.
However, the game format was not always the same. It took major alterations and twists for the BCCI to come up with this format. Otherwise, during the very first season, the trophy was played on the zonal system where the zonal winners and the runners-up qualified for the knockout stage.
Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy winners list
Since its inaugural season, 13 editions of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy have passed. But, only 9 teams have managed to win. Out of these, Baroda, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have won the title twice.
In fact, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have been the consecutive winners twice. While Maharashtra has only won once during the inaugural season. And the second edition (2010/11) saw some brilliant performance by Bengal where they won their maiden title with a margin of one run.
Next on the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy winners list is Baroda won by 8 runs. And in the edition 2012/13, Gujarat defeated Punjab by 6 wickets. During the 5th season, Baroda became the first team to win Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy twice. And then, they were followed by Gujarat during the 6th edition, where Gujarat defeated Punjab by 2 wickets.
The seventh edition from 2015 to 2016 saw another name being added to the list of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Champions list. It was Uttar Pradesh that defeated the strong team (Baroda) by 38 runs.
Then, Central Zone was defeated by East Zone which was followed by Delhi marking their name among Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy all winners. 2018 was a phenomenal season where Karnataka won their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy by 8 wickets. And they retained their title in the next season as well by defeating Tamil Nadu by 1 run.
During the 12th season, Tamil Nadu defeated Baroda and won the trophy. Also, Tamil Nadu was the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021 winner.
